SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

The 4-day programme is divided into two 2-day blocs so participants can follow the same workshops for 2 days and then choose others for the following 2 days. The workshops on the Saturday afternoon are just for that one afternoon. The 5.00 – 6.00pm sessions on Days 1, 2 and 3 are one-off sessions, mostly dealing with general aspects of shakuhachi rather than with learning pieces. The standard length of 1.8 shakuhachi will be used in the workshops. Participants who do not have a shakuhachi will be able to borrow or buy inexpensive flutes at the Summer School.
It is hoped that some one-off individual koto and shamisen lessons will be available for interested participants depending on the schedule and the availability of the teachers and the instruments.
The ‘Shakuhachi Introduction’ workshops on the Saturday and Sunday morning are for complete beginners who are unable to attend the whole 4 days full-time.
The notations for most of the pieces, together with recordings, will be available in due course on this website to help participants to prepare. Please note that copies of the notation will not generally be available during the Summer School so make sure to download and print them in advance.

LEVEL DESCRIPTORS

Beginner assumes the player has no, or very limited, experience of playing the shakuhachi.
Elementary assumes the player can obtain kari notes in otsu with reasonable security, is familiar with kan notes, even if still learning to produce them reliably, and has some basic idea of meri notes, even if intonation is unstable.
Intermediate assumes the player is secure with kari notes in otsu and kan, and is capable of producing meri notes in both octaves, with reasonably reliable intonation.
Advanced assumes the player has a high degree of proficiency and control in the production of meri and kan tones in otsu and kan, and is familiar with daikan notes. Intonation is reliable and stable, with good control of shaping and shading of dynamics, timbre and pitch.

Please note: it is sometimes useful for participants who already have some proficiency to attend workshops at a higher level than they are used to as they may benefit from the synergy of a group workshop and may learn from hearing more advanced players. Most workshops at this Summer School are divided into two levels: Elementary, and Intermediate/Advanced. If participants are in doubt about which level workshop is most suitable, please just ask the teachers for advice.

CONCERTS

There will be 4 Main Concerts in the Main Auditorium and 3 Late Night Club Sessions in a nearby Club during the event in Lisbon

Thursday 25th July: Open Mic Night
The ‘Open Microphone’ concert is a space for participants who would like to share their performances in a less formal environment and is open to all participants of the Summer School who wish to perform.
On the first day of the Summer School, 25th July, participants can sign up to perform in the concert, until the total performance times have been filled. The length of the concert is limited so pieces should be short, about 6 minutes maximum. Participation will be based on the order of signing up and the organisers reserve the right to limit the number of performers or to omit pieces if the organisation of the presentation/performance makes this necessary.

Friday 26th July: New and Established Voices Concert
This multi-genre concert will feature some established performers from around Europe as well as some newcomers to the scene including the winner of the World Shakuhachi 2018 Festival Competition, rising star Kuroda Reison.

Saturday 27th July: Teacher’s Concert
This concert will feature some of the main teachers at the event including two of the main invited guests from Japan, the renowned and award winning Zenyoji Keisuke and Kodama Hiroyuki.

Sunday 28th July: Students Concert
The Summer School will end with a special concert featuring all the participants performing and sharing the pieces which they have learned during the event.

Late Night Club Sessions
From 10.15pm on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, for the first time ever at an ESS Summer School, late night sessions will be held for all the participants in a nearby club space to perform shakuhachi as well as to improvise and to collaborate with local musicians or just to relax with a drink and absorb the vibrant atmosphere of Lisbon’s night life.
